Course localization advice usually assumes the content is conceptual — history, management theory, soft skills — where translating the language translates the meaning.
Technical and vocational training does not work that way. A cloud certification course, a data engineering bootcamp, a network security programme, or a clinical coding certificate is built around a vocabulary that is itself part of the skill. Terminal output should be subtitled rather than narrated over. Where the instructor reads output aloud, the localized version benefits from the output also being available as text the learner can pause on.
A practical consequence: bootcamp content localizes better when the instructor was recorded describing what they are doing rather than reading a script. Descriptive narration maps cleanly onto a fixed visual. Scripted narration that assumes precise timing against screen events breaks when the target-language duration differs.
Exam and Credential Alignment
Certification programmes carry a constraint that general courses do not: the assessment is often owned by someone else and delivered in a fixed set of languages.
This has to be checked before localizing, because it determines what the localized course is actually for.
Where the exam exists in the target language, align terminology to the certification body's published translated objectives exactly. The middle option is where most providers should land. The evidence from cohort programmes is consistent: learners disengage when they cannot ask a question and be understood, more than when the recorded content is imperfect. Investing in local-language support while running localized recordings usually beats investing in a perfect dub with no local support.
Assessment and Integrity
Localized assessment needs care beyond translation.
Questions testing conceptual understanding translate normally. Questions testing terminology recall may become trivially easy or impossible depending on whether the term was translated. Questions containing code should keep the code untranslated and translate only the surrounding prose. Localize one complete module, not a sample of many. A learner can evaluate a coherent module; they cannot evaluate fragments.
Choose the module with the highest drop-off in your existing cohorts, because that is where comprehension friction is most likely to be the cause and where improvement will be most visible.
Build the terminology asset during that first module and treat it as the primary deliverable — it is what makes every subsequent module fast.
