Chinese Is Not One Translation Target

Most international content programs treat Chinese as a single language with a single translation. In practice, producing video content for Chinese-speaking audiences requires decisions that other major languages rarely demand in the same way. The script system — Simplified or Traditional — is the most visible distinction, but below that choice lie vocabulary differences, spoken language variation, different market preferences for subtitles versus dubbing, and technical considerations around font selection and character encoding that have no equivalent in Latin-script languages.

Getting these decisions right matters commercially. Mainland China uses Simplified Chinese. Taiwan uses Traditional Chinese. Hong Kong uses Traditional Chinese with significant Cantonese vocabulary and distinct code-switching patterns. Singapore uses Simplified Chinese in formal contexts, though its linguistic environment is more complex. These are not interchangeable markets, and they are not interchangeable from a translation standpoint.

This guide covers the practical decisions involved in Chinese video translation: script selection, vocabulary divergence, spoken language variation, subtitle timing, reading speed norms, format preferences by market, character encoding, and font selection.

Simplified vs Traditional: More Than a Writing System

The distinction between Simplified and Traditional Chinese begins with the writing system but does not end there. Simplified Chinese was standardized in the People's Republic of China in the 1950s and 1960s, reducing the stroke count of many characters to support a national literacy initiative. Traditional Chinese, used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau, retains the older character forms.

The relationship between the two systems is not a simple one-to-one mapping. Many characters convert cleanly, and automated conversion tools can handle a significant portion of mechanical script conversion. The complication is that Simplified and Traditional Chinese are not merely different orthographies for the same language — they have diverged in vocabulary, syntax preferences, and idiom over seventy years of separate usage in distinct political, educational, and media environments.

A content program that simply converts characters from Simplified to Traditional without reviewing vocabulary will produce text that reads as foreign to its audience. The character shapes will be correct, but the words will feel imported. This is equivalent to converting American English to British English by changing 'z' spellings to 's' without reviewing for vocabulary — the spelling change is real, but "chips" still means crisps, "pants" still means trousers, and the text still reads American.

Vocabulary Differences: Same Concepts, Different Terms

The vocabulary divergence between Simplified and Traditional Chinese runs through everyday language. Several categories of difference are practically significant for video translation.

Technology terminology diverges substantially. In Simplified Chinese, "software" is 软件 (ruǎnjiàn); in Traditional Chinese usage, particularly in Taiwan, 軟體 (ruǎntǐ) is standard. "Computer" in Mainland usage is 电脑 (diànnǎo, literally "electric brain"), which is also common in Taiwan — one of the cases where both regions converged. "Mobile phone" diverges: 手机 (shǒujī) in Simplified, 手機 (shǒujī) in Traditional script — same characters, just script difference — but the colloquial terms used in speech and subtitles can differ by market.

Business and institutional vocabulary diverges as well. Terms for corporate structures, job titles, financial instruments, and administrative processes developed separately in Mainland China and Taiwan, reflecting different economic and legal systems. A translation that uses Mainland administrative terminology in Traditional characters will read as Mainland content transliterated for a Taiwanese audience — which, commercially, is exactly the impression you want to avoid.

Loanword handling differs in kind, not just degree. Both systems borrow foreign terms, but through different mechanisms and with different tolerances. Taiwanese usage generally accommodates more direct retention of English terms in technical and business contexts. Mainland usage more often coins a Chinese equivalent. Neither approach is more correct, but applying one market's convention in the other's script produces text that feels imported.

Everyday vocabulary carries the same pattern through food, transportation, and colloquial expressions. These differences rarely block comprehension — an educated reader understands both — but they mark the text's origin unmistakably.

The practical implication: script conversion is a mechanical step, not a localization step. Producing a genuine Traditional Chinese version means reviewing vocabulary with a reviewer from the specific target market, not running a converter over a Simplified translation.

Mandarin, Cantonese, and the Written-Spoken Gap

Written Chinese and spoken Chinese are related but distinct problems, and the gap between them is wider than in most languages.

Mandarin is the official spoken standard in Mainland China (as Putonghua), Taiwan (as Guoyu), and Singapore (as Huayu). The three standards differ in pronunciation, prosody, and vocabulary. The Taiwanese Mandarin accent is immediately recognizable to Mainland listeners and vice versa. For dubbed audio, this means voice selection is a market decision, not just a language decision — a Mainland Mandarin voice serving Taiwanese audiences signals the content was not made for them.

Cantonese is a separate matter entirely. It is the dominant spoken language in Hong Kong and Macau and is widely spoken in Guangdong province and among overseas Chinese communities. Cantonese and Mandarin are not mutually intelligible in speech. A Mandarin dub does not serve a Cantonese-speaking audience the way a Traditional Chinese subtitle track can.

Written Cantonese adds another layer. Formal written Chinese in Hong Kong largely follows standard written Chinese in Traditional characters, which is closer to Mandarin grammar than to spoken Cantonese. But colloquial written Cantonese — used in social media, advertising, entertainment subtitles, and informal contexts — uses distinct characters and grammatical particles that do not appear in standard written Chinese. Choosing between formal written Chinese and colloquial written Cantonese for Hong Kong subtitles is a register decision that depends entirely on content type and audience.

For most business, educational, and technical content targeting Hong Kong, Traditional Chinese subtitles in standard written form plus Cantonese audio is the combination that serves the audience best. For entertainment and youth-oriented content, colloquial written Cantonese may be more appropriate.

Subtitle Timing and Reading Speed

Chinese subtitles operate under different constraints than Latin-script subtitles, and applying English timing conventions produces poor results.

Chinese is information-dense per character. A concept requiring forty English characters may take twelve to fifteen Chinese characters. This means Chinese subtitles occupy less horizontal space for the same content, which is an advantage — but it does not mean they can be displayed for proportionally less time.

Reading speed for Chinese is typically measured in characters per second rather than words per minute. A commonly used guideline for general audiences falls in the range of four to six characters per second, with the lower end appropriate for dense technical content and the upper end acceptable for simple conversational material. Because each character carries more information than a Latin letter, comprehension time per character is higher.

Line length conventions also differ. Chinese subtitles typically hold to roughly fourteen to sixteen characters per line, with a strong preference for single-line display where possible. Two-line Chinese subtitles are used but are less standard than in Western subtitling practice.

Line breaking requires care because Chinese text has no spaces between words. Breaking mid-compound produces text that momentarily reads as nonsense before the eye reaches the second line. Breaks should fall at phrase boundaries, which requires either linguistic segmentation or human review — a naive character-count break will land mid-word regularly.

Punctuation follows different conventions as well. Chinese uses full-width punctuation marks that occupy a full character cell, and the comma used for listing (、) is distinct from the general-purpose comma (,). Subtitle text that uses half-width Latin punctuation in Chinese looks visibly wrong to native readers.

Format Preferences by Market

The subtitle-versus-dubbing question has different answers across Chinese-speaking markets, and those answers are shaped by long-standing media habits.

Mainland China has a strong subtitle tradition. Domestic television and film have long carried Chinese subtitles even for Mandarin-language content, partly because of dialect diversity across the country and partly as established convention. Audiences are highly accustomed to reading subtitles, and subtitled foreign content is standard rather than exceptional. For most content categories, high-quality Simplified Chinese subtitles serve Mainland audiences well.

Taiwan similarly has a strong subtitle culture, with Traditional Chinese subtitles standard across broadcast and streaming. Dubbing exists primarily for children's content and some imported animation.

Hong Kong presents a mixed picture: Traditional Chinese subtitles are standard, while Cantonese dubbing is common for television and film, particularly for content aimed at general audiences.

Educational and corporate content follows different logic than entertainment across all these markets. Training material, product demonstrations, and instructional video benefit from dubbed audio because viewers need to watch a demonstration while receiving the explanation — splitting attention between a screen recording and a subtitle track measurably reduces comprehension. For this category, dubbed Mandarin audio with the appropriate regional accent, paired with subtitles for reference, is often the strongest combination.

Where the same underlying content serves multiple Chinese markets, producing translated audio in market-appropriate voices while maintaining separate Simplified and Traditional subtitle tracks is more work upfront but avoids the compromise of serving three markets with one asset that fits none of them.

Character Encoding and Technical Handling

Chinese content has technical failure modes that Latin-script content does not, and they tend to surface late.

Encoding should be UTF-8 throughout the pipeline. Legacy encodings — GB2312 and GBK for Simplified, Big5 for Traditional — still appear in older systems and in files exported from legacy tools. Mixing encodings produces mojibake, the garbled character sequences that render as meaningless symbols. When receiving subtitle files from external sources, verify encoding before ingesting.

The distinction between full-width and half-width characters matters for layout. Latin letters, digits, and punctuation each exist in both forms. Mixed-width text within a Chinese subtitle line — half-width digits inside full-width Chinese text — is normal and generally correct, but inconsistent application across a subtitle file looks sloppy.

Font selection is more consequential in Chinese than in Latin-script languages. A font must contain glyphs for every character used; fonts with incomplete coverage render missing characters as boxes or blank spaces, and the gap often involves less common characters that appear in proper nouns. Simplified and Traditional character sets require different coverage, so a font suitable for one may have gaps in the other. For burned-in subtitles, verify the chosen font renders every character in the script before rendering the full video.

Character count limits in downstream systems are a recurring problem. Platforms that impose byte limits rather than character limits will cut Chinese text at roughly a third of the expected length, since each Chinese character occupies three bytes in UTF-8. Verify whether limits are byte-based or character-based before assuming a title or description will fit.

Search and Discovery

Discovery behavior in Chinese markets does not mirror Western patterns, and this affects how translated metadata should be written.

Search terms are generally shorter in Chinese because each character carries more meaning. Keyword research done for English content does not translate directly — a literal translation of an English search phrase frequently produces a phrase nobody searches for. Terminology should be validated against actual search behavior in the target market rather than derived from the source language.

Platform landscape differs by market as well. Mainland China's video, search, and social platforms are distinct from those used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, and content distribution strategy has to account for that. A single distribution approach across Chinese-speaking markets will underperform in at least some of them.

Titles and descriptions deserve independent treatment rather than direct translation. A title that works in English — often long and descriptive — may be better rendered in Chinese as a tighter phrase that matches how the audience actually searches.

A Practical Decision Sequence

Working through Chinese video translation is easier as an ordered set of decisions than as a single choice.

First, determine which specific markets you are targeting. "Chinese-speaking audiences" is not actionable; Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore are.

Second, choose script per market: Simplified for Mainland China and Singapore, Traditional for Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Third, choose spoken language per market if producing audio: Mandarin with the appropriate regional accent for Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore; Cantonese for Hong Kong and Macau.

Fourth, choose format based on content type: subtitles for most entertainment and general content, dubbed audio for instructional and demonstration content where visual attention is required.

Fifth, engage a reviewer from the specific target market, not just a fluent Chinese speaker. A Mainland reviewer cannot reliably validate Taiwanese vocabulary, and vice versa.

Sixth, verify technical output: encoding, font coverage, line breaking, punctuation width, and character limits.

Chinese markets represent an enormous addressable audience, and the effort required to serve them properly is not dramatically greater than for any other language — it is simply distributed across more decisions. The programs that succeed treat those decisions explicitly rather than defaulting to "translate into Chinese" and discovering the consequences after publication.
