Why This Direction Matters

Most localization writing assumes English is the source. A great deal of real work runs the other way.

German-speaking Europe produces an enormous volume of video that has commercial value in English. Industrial and engineering companies with global operations produce training and technical content in German first. Universities and research institutions record lectures in German. Media companies hold German-language catalogues with international potential. Corporate communications, investor material, and internal training all originate in German at organisations headquartered in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

The direction has its own problem set, and it is not simply the English-to-German problems reversed.

The headline difference is that the text gets shorter. English renderings of German source typically run ten to fifteen percent shorter in character count. Every guide about text expansion becomes a guide about contraction, and contraction causes its own difficulties — most obviously in dubbing, where the translated line finishes early and leaves the speaker's mouth moving.

Compounds
