The Urdu Audience
Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and one of the officially recognized languages of India, with roughly 230 million speakers counting first and second language use.
Pakistan has a population above 240 million with rapidly growing internet penetration and mobile video consumption. India has a substantial Urdu-speaking population. Diaspora communities in the United Kingdom, the Gulf states, the United States, and Canada add meaningful reach.
English proficiency in Pakistan is concentrated among urban, educated segments; across the general population it is limited. English-language content therefore reaches a narrow slice, and Urdu localization is a genuine reach decision.
As with Bengali, the volume of quality localized video in Urdu is thin in most specialized categories relative to the speaker count, which makes the competitive environment unusually favourable.
Nastaliq and Why the Script Style Matters
Urdu is written in the Perso-Arabic script, but with a specific and consequential difference from Arabic: Urdu is conventionally written in the Nastaliq calligraphic style rather than the Naskh style used for Arabic.
Nastaliq is visually distinctive. Words cascade diagonally downward from right to left, letter forms differ substantially from their Naskh equivalents, and the overall texture of the text is quite different.
This is not a decorative preference. Urdu readers expect Nastaliq, and Urdu text rendered in Naskh — which is what happens by default in many systems, since Arabic fonts are far more widely available — looks wrong to them. It remains readable, but it reads as foreign, in roughly the way that a European language rendered entirely in an unfamiliar script style would.
Practical consequences:
Font availability is a real constraint. Nastaliq fonts with complete Urdu coverage are less widely distributed than Arabic Naskh fonts, and many systems will fall back to Naskh silently.
Nastaliq rendering is computationally demanding. The style requires sophisticated shaping, with letter forms varying by position in complex ways. Rendering engines vary in how well they handle it.
Vertical space requirements are unusual. Because words cascade diagonally, Nastaliq text needs more vertical room per line than Naskh or Latin text. Line spacing designed for other scripts will cause collisions.
Line height and text box sizing must accommodate the cascade, and this is the most common visual failure in Urdu subtitles.
For any Urdu content, verify explicitly which script style your pipeline renders, and inspect the output visually. Do not assume that correct Unicode text produces correct-looking Urdu.
Right-to-Left Layout
Urdu shares the right-to-left direction of Arabic and the associated complications.
Text aligns right. Layouts should mirror, including directional elements such as arrows and progress indicators, which read backwards if left unchanged.
Bidirectional text is a recurring hazard, since Urdu content frequently contains embedded Latin-script runs — product names, technical terms, URLs, and numerals. Punctuation at the boundary between directions is where breakage concentrates.
Numerals require a decision. Urdu content may use Eastern Arabic numerals or Western Arabic numerals depending on context and market convention, and the choice should be consistent.
Verify rendered output on the destination platform at both desktop and mobile sizes. Right-to-left rendering failures are visible as visual defects even to someone who does not read the script, so this check can be performed by anyone.
Urdu and Hindi
Urdu and Hindi share a great deal. In everyday conversational registers they are largely mutually intelligible, with shared grammar and a substantially overlapping core vocabulary. The languages diverge in script — Urdu in Perso-Arabic, Hindi in Devanagari — and in the higher registers, where Urdu draws on Persian and Arabic vocabulary while Hindi draws on Sanskrit.
This has practical implications:
Spoken content transfers more than written content. A conversational Urdu audio track is largely comprehensible to Hindi speakers and vice versa, while the written forms are mutually inaccessible without knowing the other script.
Formal and technical registers diverge sharply. Content using elevated vocabulary will be markedly less accessible across the divide, because that is exactly where the vocabularies separate.
Subtitles must be produced separately for each script regardless of how similar the spoken content is.
Voice can sometimes serve both for conversational content, though accent and vocabulary choices will mark the origin.
For programmes targeting both audiences, the efficient structure is often a shared conversational register in audio with separate script-specific subtitle tracks, plus attention to keeping technical vocabulary in the shared or borrowed-English space rather than in the divergent formal registers.
Register and Formality
Urdu has a formality system expressed through pronouns and corresponding verb forms.
The most formal form is used with elders, superiors, strangers, and in professional and institutional contexts. It is the appropriate default for commercial, instructional, and corporate content addressing a general adult audience.
The middle form is used with peers and in moderately familiar contexts.
The familiar form is used with close friends, children, and subordinates, and is inappropriate for addressing an audience.
Urdu also has a strong register distinction between elevated literary vocabulary — drawing heavily on Persian and Arabic — and everyday conversational vocabulary.
Formal Urdu is genuinely elevated relative to spoken Urdu, more so than the formal-informal gap in many languages. Content in high literary register reads as poetic or official rather than as ordinary communication, and applying it to instructional content produces something that sounds ceremonial.
For most commercial and instructional content, the target is polite conversational Urdu: respectful pronoun forms, everyday vocabulary, and technical terms in whatever form the audience actually uses.
Terminology
Urdu technical vocabulary sits between formal coinages and English borrowing, with the balance depending on register and audience.
Formal Urdu terminology exists for many technical concepts, developed through language planning efforts, and appears in educational and official content.
Everyday professional usage borrows heavily from English, often retaining the English term either transliterated into Urdu script or in Latin script.
For content aimed at working professionals and general audiences, English technical terms are usually the natural choice, and formal Urdu coinages read as artificially purist.
Transliteration conventions matter. Established English terms have conventional Urdu-script renderings, and inventing new ones produces text that looks wrong.
Build the glossary with a native reviewer from the target market, specifying per term whether it takes an Urdu form, a transliterated English form, or stays in Latin script.
Text Length and Timing
Urdu text length relative to English varies by register. Conversational Urdu is roughly comparable; formal Urdu with elevated vocabulary runs longer.
The more significant constraint for subtitles is vertical rather than horizontal. Nastaliq's cascading line structure means Urdu subtitle lines occupy considerably more vertical space than Latin equivalents at the same nominal size, which limits how many lines fit and how small the text can be while remaining legible.
This argues for shorter subtitle lines and for single-line subtitles where possible, and it makes dubbed audio comparatively more attractive than subtitles for mobile viewing.
For audio, standard timing practice applies.
Subtitles or Dubbing
For Urdu audiences, dubbed audio generally serves better than subtitles alone.
Literacy varies across the population, and audio reaches viewers that text does not.
Nastaliq rendering at mobile subtitle sizes is demanding on both the rendering pipeline and the reader, and small Nastaliq text is genuinely harder to read than small Latin text.
Viewing is heavily mobile, where subtitle space is constrained.
The strongest configuration is dubbed Urdu audio with a subtitle track available, rendered generously.
Voice Selection
Match register to content, targeting polite conversational rather than elevated literary delivery for most content.
Pakistani and Indian Urdu accents differ, and voice selection should match the target market.
Verify pronunciation of proper nouns, transliterated English terms, and Persian- or Arabic-derived vocabulary, which are common failure points.
Where the on-screen speaker's identity matters to the content, voice cloning carries it into the Urdu version.
Test a sample with a native listener before full generation, and ask specifically whether the register sounds appropriate rather than only whether the words are correct.
Numbers, Dates, and Formats
Decide the numeral convention — Eastern or Western Arabic forms — and apply it consistently.
Urdu uses the South Asian numbering system for large figures, grouping numbers differently from the international thousand-based system. Generated audio reading large numbers in international grouping sounds wrong, and this is a frequent failure in South Asian language audio.
Currency differs by market — rupee in both Pakistan and India, but distinct currencies.
Calendar references may include the Islamic calendar alongside the Gregorian one, particularly for cultural and seasonal content.

A Working Sequence
Verify that your pipeline renders Nastaliq correctly, with adequate vertical spacing, before planning content. This is the single most important technical check and the one most likely to fail silently.
Choose the target market — Pakistan or India — since it affects accent, currency, and some vocabulary.
Set the register to polite conversational rather than formal literary, and record the pronoun form.
Build a glossary specifying transliteration forms and English versus Urdu term choices, validated by a native reviewer.
Translate, then have a native reviewer check register level specifically, since elevated vocabulary is the most common register error.
Produce dubbed audio as the primary deliverable, with generously rendered subtitles alongside.
Inspect rendered output visually — script style, vertical spacing, bidirectional boundaries, numeral forms — on the destination platform at mobile size.
Urdu is a large audience served by relatively little quality localized content, and the barrier is largely technical rather than linguistic. Programmes that verify their rendering pipeline and target a natural conversational register clear most of what separates adequate Urdu content from the machine-processed alternatives that currently occupy the space.
Common Failure Modes
Naskh rendering instead of Nastaliq. The default failure in most pipelines, since Arabic fonts are far more widely available. The result is readable and reads as foreign to its own audience.

The rendering failures are the ones to guard against hardest, because they ship silently. Nobody on a producing team without an Urdu reader will notice that the script style is wrong.
Content Categories That Perform
Certain content categories have particularly strong demand in Urdu-speaking markets relative to available supply.
Practical skills and vocational training. Technical education, trades, and skills content has substantial demand and thin quality supply. Content in this area frequently outperforms expectations.
Financial literacy and business. Small business guidance, personal finance, and entrepreneurship content reaches an audience actively seeking it with few quality alternatives in Urdu.
Health information. General health education has clear demand, with the caveat that health content carries the accuracy obligations discussed for medical material generally.
Educational content across academic subjects, particularly at secondary and tertiary level, where students frequently supplement instruction with online material.
Technology and software instruction, serving both the growing domestic technology sector and general digital literacy.
Consumer entertainment is well supplied domestically and is a harder competitive environment for imported localized content.
The pattern across these categories is that instructional and practical content has better return than entertainment, because domestic production covers entertainment well while specialized instructional material remains scarce.
Measuring Results
Track discovery and consumption separately, as in any market.
Impressions in Urdu indicate whether content is surfacing at all, which is primarily a metadata and rendering question.
Completion rate compared against the source version indicates whether register, voice, and quality are working. Sharp early drop-off often indicates a rendering problem the audience encountered immediately.
Because Urdu-language competition is thin in many categories, position can establish faster than in saturated markets, and early results may understate eventual reach.
Comments in Urdu are a valuable and underused signal. Audiences comment on register and script rendering directly, and the feedback is specific enough to act on.
