Delivery Is Content
Text carries what was said. Delivery carries how it was meant, and the two are not separable in speech.
The same sentence delivered as a statement, a question, or an aside means different things. Emphasis on a different word changes which alternative is being excluded. Pace signals importance. A pause before a phrase marks it as considered; a pause after marks it as significant.
None of this is in the transcript, and none of it survives translation automatically. A dub with a flawless translation and wrong delivery communicates something different from the original, and viewers register the difference without necessarily identifying its cause.
Voice direction is the stage that addresses this, and it is the stage most often omitted — partly because generation is fast enough that it feels finished, and partly because evaluating delivery requires listening to the whole track, which takes as long as the content runs.
Voice Selection
Selection precedes direction and constrains it, so the choice deserves more attention than a quick audition.
Match apparent age and gender to the source speaker where the speaker appears on camera. Mismatch is noticed immediately in on-camera content and still registers in voiceover.
Match register to content type. Corporate training, product marketing, documentary narration, and casual creator content sit at measurably different points on a formality and energy scale. Most voice libraries include voices tuned toward particular registers, and choosing one that fits the content is more effective than trying to direct a mismatched voice into position.
Match register to market convention, not to the source. Delivery norms differ by market. Promotional intensity that reads as appropriately energetic in one market reads as overselling in another. The correct target is what the target market expects for that content type, not a reproduction of the source delivery.
Consider pace as a functional constraint. In languages that expand relative to the source — German, Russian, Spanish, Polish — a voice with naturally brisk delivery leaves headroom for fitted timing. A slow, weighty voice sounds excellent in a sample and then forces compression once real segments have to fit.
For multi-speaker content, ensure separation. Voices should be distinguishable by timbre alone, since viewers lose the visual cues that separated speakers in the original.
Test with real content. Sample phrases demonstrate a voice's best case. Sixty seconds of your actual script, with your actual terminology and sentence structures, demonstrates how it will really sound.
Voice Cloning and When It Fits
Where the speaker's identity is part of the content, voice cloning generates the translated audio in their own voice rather than substituting an unrelated one.
This matters most for:
Personality-driven content, where the audience follows a specific person. Creators, presenters, and coaches have relationships with their audiences that a different voice interrupts.
Executive and leadership communication, where the message's authority derives partly from who is delivering it.
Series and libraries, where consistency across many assets matters and a cloned voice keeps the same person present in every language version.
Content where the speaker appears on camera, since seeing one person and hearing an obviously different one creates a mismatch that voiceover-only content avoids.
Cloning does not remove the direction problem. A cloned voice still needs the right pace, emphasis, and register for each segment, and a cloned voice delivering content badly is more jarring than a generic voice doing so, because the audience expects that person to sound right.
Consent is a requirement rather than a courtesy. The person whose voice is cloned should agree specifically to that use, with scope and duration clear.
Directing Pace
Pace is the most consequential adjustable parameter and the one most often left at default.
Instructional content should be slower than conversational content. Viewers following along need time to process each step, and the natural tendency of generated speech is to run at a uniform conversational rate throughout.
Slow down for dense information. Passages containing numbers, technical terms, or unfamiliar concepts need more time than narrative passages. Uniform pacing across varying density is a common weakness in generated audio.
Pause at structural boundaries. Gaps between sections, before important points, and after questions do real work in comprehension. Generated audio frequently runs sections together.
Avoid compression as a timing solution. Where a segment overruns, condensing the text preserves natural delivery; speeding the speech degrades prosody first and intelligibility second. Beyond roughly ten percent, listeners perceive rushing.
Watch cumulative pace drift. In long content, small pace differences accumulate, and the last third may be noticeably faster or slower than the first.
Where the platform supports explicit pause and rate control, use it segment by segment rather than setting a global value. Uniform settings across varied content produce audio that is right on average and wrong specifically.
Directing Emphasis
Emphasis placement changes meaning, and default emphasis is frequently wrong.
Generated speech places emphasis based on syntactic patterns, which produces plausible-sounding delivery that may stress the wrong element. In a sentence contrasting two options, the contrast needs to be audible; in a sentence correcting a misconception, the correction needs stress.
The common failures worth checking:
Statements delivered with question intonation, which makes assertions sound uncertain. This is one of the most frequent and most damaging errors.
Lists delivered without list intonation, so that enumerated items run together.
Contrastive pairs without contrast, where the whole point of the sentence is the difference between two things and the delivery flattens it.
Emphasis on function words rather than on content words.
Uniform emphasis, where nothing is stressed and everything sounds equally important, which is exhausting to listen to and makes the content harder to follow.
Where the platform supports emphasis markup, apply it to the passages where meaning depends on it rather than attempting to mark everything.
Pronunciation Control
Mispronunciation is the most noticeable single defect in generated audio and usually the easiest to fix.
The recurring categories:
Proper nouns — company names, product names, personal names, place names. These are almost never pronounced correctly by default and are exactly the words the audience cares about most.
Technical vocabulary and acronyms. Whether an acronym is spelled out or pronounced as a word is a decision, and the default is often wrong.
Loanwords. A borrowed term may take the source-language pronunciation or an adapted target-language pronunciation, and using the wrong one sounds affected.
Numbers in context. Years, versions, model numbers, and identifiers are read differently from cardinal quantities.
Homographs. Words spelled identically with different pronunciations depending on meaning are resolved by context that generated speech may misread.
Build pronunciation overrides into the glossary rather than fixing them per project. A name corrected once should stay corrected across every future asset, and rediscovering the same correction repeatedly is a reliable sign that the glossary is not being used as the durable artifact it should be.
Evaluating the Output
Evaluation requires listening to the complete track, and there is no shortcut.
Listen once for pronunciation, noting every wrong proper noun and technical term. Listen again for prosody — question intonation, emphasis, list delivery, contrast. Listen a third time for pace and pauses if the content is instructional.
Check the beginning and the end specifically. Openings set expectations, and endings are where timing drift and pace changes accumulate.
Listen on a phone speaker, not only on headphones. Most viewing happens on phones, and problems that are subtle on good headphones become obvious on a small speaker — thin delivery, over-compressed dynamics, sibilance.
Have a native speaker listen for the target language. Delivery problems that are audible to a native listener are frequently inaudible to someone who does not speak the language, since the cues that signal wrongness are language-specific.
Ask a specific question rather than a general one. "Does this sound like a person from here delivering this kind of content" produces more useful feedback than "is this good."
Common Failure Patterns
Register mismatch. A corporate voice on casual content or an energetic voice on serious content, which is a selection error rather than a direction one.
Uniform pacing. The same rate throughout regardless of content density.
Missing pauses. Sections and points running together without structural breaks.
Question intonation on statements. Widespread and undermines authority.
Uncorrected proper nouns. The single most noticeable defect.
Compression to fit timing. Rushed delivery where the text should have been condensed instead.
Inconsistency across a series. Different voices or different settings between assets in the same library.
Level inconsistency. Loudness varying between segments or between assets, which is noticeable when viewers move through a library.
Mixing and Levels
Generated speech is not a finished audio track, and the mixing stage affects perceived quality as much as the voice choice does.
Set dialogue to a consistent target loudness. Streaming platforms have conventional targets, and content that deviates is either quiet relative to everything else the viewer watches or is normalized down by the platform in ways that flatten dynamics.
Consistency matters more than the exact target. Level variation between segments is more noticeable than a level that is uniformly slightly off, and variation between assets in a library is noticeable when viewers move between them.
Retain music and effects beneath the new dialogue. Where a music-and-effects stem from the original production exists, use it. Where it does not, the original audio's non-speech content has to be preserved around the replaced dialogue, which limits how aggressively the original can be ducked.
Duck background elements under speech rather than letting them compete. Generated speech has less dynamic presence than a recorded performance and gets buried more easily.
Check segment transitions for clicks, abrupt level changes, and unnatural silence. Short crossfades at boundaries prevent the audible seams that mark generated audio as assembled.
Leave appropriate room tone rather than absolute digital silence between segments, which sounds unnatural against content recorded in a real space.
Building It Into the Workflow
Select the voice against real content, not sample phrases, and record the selection as part of the project configuration.
Set pace and pause behaviour per content type rather than globally.
Maintain pronunciation overrides in the glossary so corrections persist.
Generate a sixty-second sample and approve it before processing the full asset. This single step prevents the most expensive failure mode, which is discovering a voice or setting problem after generating a long asset.
Listen to the full output before publication, with a native speaker for the target language.
Lock the configuration across a series so that consistency holds.
Build a reference sample per language. Once a voice and its settings produce output that a native reviewer approves, keep a short clip as the reference for that language and content type. Future work can be checked against it quickly, new reviewers can be calibrated with it, and drift over time becomes visible rather than gradual.
Voice direction is where the difference between adequate and convincing dubbing sits. The translation stage determines whether the words are right; this stage determines whether a listener believes a person is speaking to them. It costs listening time rather than money, which is why it gets skipped — and why the content that does it stands out.
Multi-Speaker Direction
Content with several speakers requires direction decisions that single-narrator content does not.
Assign voices for contrast, not just for accuracy. Two voices that each match their speaker well but resemble each other leave listeners unable to track who is speaking, since the visual and vocal cues that separated them in the original are diminished.
Keep assignments stable across a series. A speaker whose voice changes between assets breaks continuity for an audience following a library.
Match relative energy between speakers. If one speaker was noticeably more animated than another in the original, that relationship should survive, since it carries information about the dynamic between them.
Handle interruption and overlap deliberately. Generated speech does not interrupt convincingly, and overlapping delivery usually needs to be serialized. Decide the policy in advance rather than per instance.
Check attribution before generating. A misattributed segment means the wrong voice delivers a line, which is obvious to viewers and expensive to correct after a long asset has been generated.
