What Prosody Is
Prosody is everything about speech that is not the words: pitch movement, loudness, timing, rhythm, and voice quality. It is what remains when you listen to a conversation through a wall and can hear the shape of the exchange without any of the content.
It is not ornamental. Prosody carries information that the words cannot.
It marks structure. Where a phrase ends, whether a sentence is finished, which part is a parenthetical aside. A listener parses a spoken sentence largely by its intonation contour.
It marks focus. "I didn't say she took the money" means seven different things depending on which word is stressed. The words are identical. All the meaning is in the prosody.
It marks speech act. The difference between a statement and a question is intonation in many languages, including English in the cases where syntax does not mark it.
It marks attitude and emotion. Certainty, doubt, irony, enthusiasm, resignation. Very little of this is lexical.
It marks turn-taking. Whether a speaker is finished or drawing breath mid-thought.
This is why flat synthesis is not merely unpleasant. It is lossy. A monotone rendering of a sentence that depended on contrastive stress has lost meaning, not just warmth.
Why Synthetic Voices Sound Wrong
Modern neural voice synthesis produces speech that is close to natural at the segment level. The remaining problems are almost all prosodic, and they cluster into recognisable failure modes.
Flatness. Under-varied pitch and energy across a long passage. Individually every sentence sounds acceptable; across two minutes the absence of variation registers as machinery. This is the most common complaint about narration-length content.
Wrong focus. Stress placed on a function word or on the wrong content word, because the system had no way to know which word carried the contrast. A sentence with misplaced stress sounds subtly odd and can sound outright wrong.

Overacting. The opposite failure, and increasingly common as expressive controls improve. A system asked for "excited" applies excitement uniformly, producing delivery that is relentless where a human would modulate. Sustained high expressiveness is more tiring to listen to than flatness.
Emotional mismatch. Delivery that does not fit the content, usually because the emotional setting was chosen per asset rather than per passage. Bad news delivered brightly is worse than bad news delivered flatly.
Breath and pause artefacts. Breaths in implausible places, or an unnatural absence of them. Humans breathe at syntactic boundaries; synthetic speech that breathes elsewhere sounds wrong even when listeners cannot say why.
Prosody Does Not Transfer Between Languages
This is the point that most affects dubbing, and it is frequently misunderstood.
There is a natural intuition that a good dub should preserve the original performance's intonation. It should preserve the original performance's intent — but the prosodic means of expressing that intent differ by language, and copying the contour directly produces something that sounds foreign.
Focus is marked differently. English marks contrastive focus primarily with pitch accent, leaving word order fixed. Many languages mark it with word order or with dedicated particles instead, and applying an English-style pitch accent on top of a language that has already marked focus syntactically produces double-marking that sounds emphatic to the point of strange.

Tone languages have hard constraints. In Mandarin, Vietnamese, Thai, Yoruba and others, pitch movement distinguishes words. Expressive intonation must operate within the tonal system rather than overriding it, and a system that applies a foreign pitch contour can change what the words mean.
The correct target is intent preservation with native prosodic realisation: this line is urgent, this line is an aside, this word carries the contrast — expressed the way the target language expresses those things.
Controls That Actually Help
Segment-level emotional direction rather than asset-level. The single highest-value change. Setting one emotional tone for a ten-minute video guarantees it is wrong somewhere. Marking passages — neutral for exposition, warm for the welcome, serious for the safety warning — costs a few minutes and improves the whole.
Explicit focus marking. Where the system supports emphasis markup, marking the contrastively stressed word in sentences that depend on one fixes the most meaning-damaging error class. Not every sentence needs it; the ones that do are usually obvious in the script.
Punctuation as prosodic instruction. Most systems derive phrasing from punctuation. This means punctuation in the script is a control surface, not just orthography. Splitting a long sentence at a comma into two sentences changes the phrasing. Deliberate punctuation in the source script is one of the cheapest prosody controls available.
Pronunciation and phrasing hints for hard cases. Numbers, abbreviations, acronyms, units, dates, and proper nouns are where structural mis-parsing concentrates. Writing them out as they should be spoken removes the ambiguity.
Moderate expressiveness settings. Where a system exposes an intensity control, the natural-sounding range is usually lower than the maximum. Full expressiveness is for moments, not for defaults.
Reference audio where supported. Some systems accept a sample demonstrating desired delivery. Choosing a reference that matches the target register is more effective than adjusting parameters.
Pace tuned to content type. Instructional content benefits from slower delivery with real pauses; promotional content from a brisker one. This is a per-project decision that is often left at default.
Reviewing for Prosody
Reviewers asked to check a dub usually check accuracy — did it say the right words. Prosodic problems need to be looked for explicitly.
Listen without the source. Prosodic errors hide when you already know what the line means. Listening cold surfaces them.
Listen at length. Flatness and contour uniformity are invisible in a thirty-second sample and obvious over five minutes. Sample-based review systematically misses the most common problem.
Check the meaning-bearing sentences specifically. Any sentence with a contrast, a negation, a comparison, or an exception is a candidate for misplaced focus. These deserve individual attention.
Check the transitions. Section boundaries, topic changes, and the beginnings and ends of the asset are where contour uniformity is most audible.
Check emotional fit at the passage level. Does the delivery match what is being said here, not on average.
Have a native speaker check tone-language content specifically for pitch contours that interfere with lexical tone.

Where the Technology Is
Being straightforward about the current state helps set expectations.
Segment-level naturalness is largely solved. Isolated sentences from a good system are difficult to distinguish from recorded speech.
Sustained natural prosody over long passages is not solved. Systems still drift toward uniformity, still mis-parse complex structures, and still lack the world knowledge to know which word carries the contrast without being told.
Emotional range is real but coarse. Systems can produce recognisably different emotional deliveries; they cannot yet modulate within a passage the way a performer does.
The practical consequence is that prosody remains a directed activity. The gains available from segment-level direction, deliberate punctuation, explicit focus marking, and moderate settings are large, and they are gains available today rather than pending a model upgrade.
