The Most Common Wasted Investment

A content team localizes a video into six languages. The audio is dubbed well, the subtitles are accurate, the terminology was reviewed. The video is published with its original English title, English description, and English tags.

Nobody in those six markets finds it.

This is the single most common failure in video localization, and it wastes the entire investment rather than degrading it. Discovery is the mechanism by which localized content reaches its audience, and metadata is the mechanism by which discovery happens. Translating the content while leaving the metadata untranslated is like translating a book and leaving the cover in the original language.

The fix is not expensive. It is simply a step that gets skipped because the video feels like the deliverable and the metadata feels like packaging.

Keyword Research Does Not Translate

The first principle of multilingual video SEO is that keywords must be researched in the target language, not translated from source keywords.

A direct translation of an English search phrase frequently produces a phrase nobody types. There are several reasons this happens consistently:

Different words carry search volume. Where a language has multiple terms for a concept — a native term and a borrowed English term, a formal term and a colloquial one — search volume typically concentrates on one, and it is not predictable which. Translating the English term produces whichever equivalent the translator preferred, which may be the low-volume one.

Query structure differs. Some languages favour short noun phrases where English uses questions, or vice versa. Query length conventions vary substantially.

The underlying question may differ. What people want to know about a topic is not identical across markets. A market where a product category is mature generates different queries than one where it is new.

Grammatical structure changes the phrase. In inflected and agglutinative languages, the form of a search phrase differs from a dictionary translation of its parts.

Research each market's terms directly using keyword tools with the market and language set correctly, look at what already ranks for the topic in that language, and check the vocabulary that market's audience actually uses in comments and community discussion.

Where both a borrowed English term and a native term have volume, use both — in the title if it fits naturally, and in the description regardless.

Metadata That Needs Localizing

For each language version, the following should be authored in the target language:

Title. Written around the researched keyword, at the length convention for that market, rather than translated from the source title. Source titles translated directly tend to run long after expansion and read awkwardly.

Description. The full description, not just the first line. Descriptions carry substantial weight in video search and are also what appears in search result snippets.

Tags and keywords where the platform supports them, researched rather than translated.

Category and topic assignment where these differ by market.

Thumbnail text. Thumbnails carrying text should have localized versions. This is frequently the single highest-impact element for click-through and is often overlooked because it is a design task rather than a text task.

Chapter markers and timestamps. These appear in search results for some platforms and improve navigation.

Captions and subtitle tracks, which are themselves indexed on several platforms and contribute to how the content is understood.

Playlist and series names where the content belongs to a set.

Transcripts as Ranking Material

Video content is opaque to text-based search unless something exposes what it contains, and transcripts are that something.

Publishing a full transcript alongside a localized video gives search systems substantial text in the target language describing exactly what the video covers. This is more comprehensive than any description and uses the natural vocabulary of the content.

Several practices improve the return:

Publish the transcript on the page hosting the video rather than only as a caption file, where the page is one you control.

Format it readably with headings and paragraph structure rather than as an undifferentiated block, which serves both search systems and readers.

Include timestamps linked to points in the video, which improves usability and creates additional matchable text.

Ensure the transcript reflects the localized version rather than being a translation of the source transcript, so that the vocabulary matches what the localized audio actually says.

Transcripts also serve viewers who prefer reading, viewers with limited bandwidth, and accessibility needs, which makes them one of the better cost-to-benefit additions available.

Hosting and hreflang

Where localized video lives on pages you control, the standard multilingual web practices apply and matter.

Language annotations telling search systems which page serves which language and region prevent the wrong version being surfaced and prevent versions competing with each other. These need to be reciprocal — each version pointing to all others — and consistent, since errors here are common and undermine the whole setup.

Distinct URLs per language. Serving different content at the same URL based on detected browser language prevents search systems from indexing each version, because the crawler sees only one.

Consistent structure. Whether language is indicated by subdirectory, subdomain, or domain, applying one approach consistently is more important than which is chosen.

Avoid automatic redirection based on detected location without an override, since it prevents indexing of versions other than the one the crawler is redirected to, and it frustrates users who want a different language than their location implies.

Localized structured data describing the video, including the title, description, duration, and thumbnail in the target language.

Localized page content around the video. A localized video embedded in an English page sends a mixed signal and gives search systems little target-language material to work with.

Platform-Specific Considerations

Different platforms weight different signals, and multilingual strategy should account for the specific platform.

Video platforms with subscriber relationships distribute new content primarily to existing audiences, which means a localized video is served first to people who may not speak that language. This produces weak early engagement signals, which can suppress further distribution. Separate channels per language avoid this and generally perform better for serious multi-market expansion.

Algorithmic short-form platforms distribute to interest-matched audiences rather than to subscribers, which means localized content can find a new audience without an existing following. Language and market signals from the account matter, which again favours separate accounts.

Search-driven discovery on general web search rewards transcripts, structured data, and page-level localization more than platform-native signals.

Marketplace and platform-internal search typically weights title and description matching heavily, making keyword research the dominant factor.

Where content is published to multiple destinations, the metadata should be adapted per destination rather than reused, since title length conventions, tag support, and description handling all differ.

Language and Region Targeting

Language and region are distinct, and conflating them produces avoidable problems.

Spanish content may target Spain, Mexico, Argentina, or the Spanish-speaking population of the United States, and these are different markets with different vocabulary, different competitive landscapes, and different search behaviour.

Where content targets multiple regions in one language, a neutral variety with region-appropriate keyword coverage is a reasonable compromise. Where one region dominates commercially, optimizing for that region's vocabulary is better than splitting the difference.

Where separate regional versions are justified, they should be distinguished properly through language and region annotation rather than competing as duplicate content.

Portuguese and Chinese are the clearest cases where regional splitting is usually necessary, since European and Brazilian Portuguese and Simplified and Traditional Chinese serve genuinely different audiences.

Measuring Discovery

Track discovery separately from consumption, because they fail differently.

Impressions in the target language measure whether the content is being surfaced at all. Low impressions indicate a discovery problem — metadata, keywords, or indexing.

Click-through rate measures whether the title and thumbnail work once surfaced. Low click-through with good impressions points at title or thumbnail rather than at the video.

Ranking for target keywords measures competitive position directly and shows whether the keyword research was accurate.

Traffic source breakdown shows whether discovery is coming from search, from platform recommendation, or from external referral, each of which responds to different optimization.

Completion rate measures content quality once discovered, and should be read separately from discovery metrics.

The common pattern in poorly optimized multilingual video is good completion rate with negligible impressions: the content is good and nobody finds it. This is a metadata problem, and it is fixable without touching the video.

Competitive Assessment by Market

Search competition varies enormously by language, and this should drive which markets to prioritize as much as audience size does.

For a given topic, the volume of existing content differs by orders of magnitude between languages. English-language content is abundant in almost every category. Many other languages have substantial gaps, particularly in specialized, technical, and professional topics where content production has concentrated in English.

This creates an asymmetry worth exploiting. A localized version of proven content entering a market with thin coverage in that topic can rank quickly, where the same content in English would compete against thousands of established alternatives.

Assess this directly: search the target keyword in the target language and look at what ranks. Sparse results, low-quality results, or results that are themselves poor machine translations all indicate opportunity. Dense results from established local sources indicate a harder market.

This assessment frequently reorders market priorities. A language with a smaller audience but negligible competition in your topic may return more than a larger language where the topic is saturated.

It also affects effort allocation. In a thin market, adequate localized content ranks. In a competitive one, content must be genuinely better than what exists, which means the localization quality bar is higher.

Repeat the assessment periodically. Content gaps close, and a market that was open two years ago may not be now.

A Working Sequence

Research keywords in each target market before writing any metadata, using tools set to that market and language.

Author the title, description, and tags natively around the researched terms rather than translating the source metadata.

Produce localized thumbnail variants where thumbnails carry text.

Publish full localized transcripts on pages you control, formatted readably.

Implement language annotation, distinct URLs, and localized structured data for hosted video.

Choose account and channel structure deliberately, favouring separate channels per language for serious multi-market work.

Measure impressions, click-through, and ranking separately from completion, and diagnose accordingly.

Watch for duplicate-content confusion. Multiple language versions of the same video are not duplicates, but they can be treated as such if the language signals are missing or inconsistent. Correct language annotation is what tells search systems these are alternates rather than repetitions, and getting it wrong can suppress all of them rather than surfacing the right one.

Do the metadata even when you skip the dubbing. Where budget does not permit full localization, translated metadata plus a subtitle track captures a meaningful share of the available discovery at a small fraction of the cost. This is frequently the better allocation for a long tail of content that would not justify full treatment — broad shallow coverage on discovery, deep treatment on the assets that earn it.

Update metadata as language shifts. Search vocabulary changes — borrowed terms displace native ones or the reverse, and query phrasing evolves. Metadata written three years ago against then-current keywords may be matching phrases that have declined. Periodic refresh of titles and descriptions on high-value content is cheap and recovers visibility that quietly eroded.

Give it time before judging. Search visibility for newly published localized content builds over weeks and months rather than days, and early data systematically understates where the content will settle. Programs that evaluate localized content on two weeks of data routinely conclude a market does not work when the content had not yet been indexed and ranked.

The economics here are favourable in a way that is easy to miss. The video localization is the expensive part and it is already done. Metadata localization is a small fraction of that cost, and without it the larger investment returns almost nothing. It is the cheapest step in the process and the one that determines whether any of the rest matters.
